The increasing availability of transportation facility such as toll highway has bring about the plethora of traffic-related accidents. There are several plausible means that might be taken in order to minimize, or possibly to prevent, such unfortunate events to occur; one of which is by providing public facilities located in some designated area along the highway.for drivers and passengers to rest, eat or refuel.
Rest-area is a public facility whose very existence is to provide the road-users safety and comfort during their journey. Such place would inarguably bring about significant contribution, particularly, in reducing the number of casualties resulting from traffic accidents. In this area, not only visitors can have relaxing breaks from their exhausting trips, but they might also make use of various supporting services that are available, namely traffic condition reports, weather reports and vehicle safety check.
Along its growth and development, rest area may play a more potential role, particularly in nourishing the economic activities of its surroundings by serving as a commercial and local tourism center. Such function may still further develop. One possible way is by enhancing its function to serve as an ecological preservation and development center. This would also lead to rest-area being an alternative recreational site offering integrated and attractive services.
Considering the many potentials and functions that a rest-area may serve, the idea of transforming such facility into a multi-functional public area was born under a concept of "ONE STOP RESTING". And to support such idea, Green Architecture may be chosen as a possible theme for the 'elixir' and means of solution in designing a multi-functional rest area.
